The Healing Power of Jesus Part 1

Kingdom Power-Healing

“The blind see, the lame walk, lepers are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised…the Kingdom of God has come near to you” (Matthew 11:5, Luke 10:9)

The Christian Scriptures teach that Jesus did not only teach about the Kingdom but he also demonstrated this Kingdom with healing power and authority.  The four biographical accounts of Jesus (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) record approximately 41 demonstrations of Jesus’ healing power.

“Jesus spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him.  And he asked him, ‘Do you see anything?’  And the blind man looked up and said, ‘I see men but they look like walking trees.’” Mark 8:24

The healing power of Jesus was not always instantaneous.  In this account (Mark 4:22-25) the healing of a blind man came in stages.  At first, he could only see partially: “I see men but they look like walking trees.”  It is only after a second touch of Jesus’ hands that his full sight was restored.

The healing power of Jesus was different for every individual.  –No two healings were the same.  Each person was approached according to their own experience and according to their own view of the world.  Psychologists tell us that each person interprets their present experience through the lens of their own individual past experiences.  In other words, each person interprets present reality according to their own individual experiences of past reality.  Jesus understood this, and so he met each person according to their own worldview.

“A centurion came to Jesus saying, ‘My servant is lying paralyzed and in great distress.’  Jesus said to him, ‘I will come and heal him.’  But the centurion answered, ‘You only need to just Speak a Word and my servant will be healed.’  Jesus said ‘Go; it will be done for you.’”  (Matthew 8:5-13)

The heart, the core, the essence of Jesus’ healing power was his spoken word.  Somehow and in some way Jesus was able to break down the barrier between thought, word and material substance.  The veil, the gap between thought and thing, between mind and matter, between thinking and physicality and between the breath/voice of the speaker and the physical body of the listener was completely lifted—and it was lifted through the spoken word.
